Sometimes I just want her to stay a little girl. . . .

She’s not my little girl. She’s biologically my sister-in-law’s, but sometimes she feels like my kid and I find myself becoming fiercely protective of her.

She has four sisters at home who instill the same reaction in me.

Some days I look at her and she is just 11 and likes to kick soccer balls and run through mud puddles and climb trees.

Other days something she does or says, or a look she gives me, gives me a peek into the future and a chill runs across the top of my skin.

“She’s not ready. She’s just a little girl. She can’t grow up yet,” I start thinking.

Then just as fast as I see her several years from now, she morphs back into an 11 year old and I sigh a bit and feel more relaxed.

One day, though, I know I will look and it will be the other way around. She’ll be a young woman, but I’ll still see a glimpse of an 11-year old girl in her smile.

  1. I know it’s crazy how quick they grow up. It seems like my sister’s kids were just infants yesterday and now they are 13 and 15! OMG. Her oldest will be driving on the road with us soon! Holy canolli! Love that last shot! Very cool!

  2. these pictures are so cute! love them!

  3. I love this post: Beautiful —both words and pictures.

    They do grow up way too fast, don’t they?

Sweet Shot Tuesday: Remembering Great Grandpa {Athens, PA Photographer}

For the first time since the funeral Jonathan and I visited Great Grandpa’s grave. I don’t live visiting graves, but not for the reason some may think. I’m not not “creeped out.” I’m not scared. I simply don’t like the fact I’m visiting a family member who I can’t see and who can’t talk back to me. It breaks my heart. And I could tell it was breaking my 5-year old’s too.
